Every year, whether you realize it or not, October is set aside as a time to recognize the importance of dental hygiene in Lititz and around the country. It’s a moment to celebrate clean, healthy mouths, and the dental hygienists who help us keep them that way! In 2018, the focus is on proper hygiene routines — or how you keep your smile looking and feeling its best. Keep reading to learn more about how you and your family can celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month with better brushing and flossing!
Proper Hygiene Habits
You probably learned the steps of keeping your teeth clean during childhood, but if you are like most, it may be time for a brief brushup on brushing and flossing techniques. The American Dental Association and your dentist in Lititz recommend brushing for two minutes, at least twice a day — but brushing after each meal would be even better.
When you brush your teeth, keep the following in mind:
- Brush each quadrant of the mouth in a circular motion for 30 seconds each
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for a gentle clean
- Choose a fluoride toothpaste to provide extra strength for your tooth enamel
You should also floss between your teeth at least once a day. This step is where most people fall short — but remembering to floss is just about developing the habit. Leave the stuff out somewhere you are sure to see it each night and don’t consider yourself ready for bed until you have cleaned between your teeth!
As you floss, remember to:
- Gently rub the dental floss up and down and from side to side, cleaning right under the gum line, too
- Do not treat flossing as a rapid-fire attack — take your time
- Move to a new section of dental floss after each tooth to avoid spreading bacteria
Visit Your Dentist This Month
Patients of all ages should visit the dentist at least twice annually for a checkup and cleaning. It may seem like a lot, but this frequency is necessary for keeping your smile clean and for early detection — which helps your dentist provide the most conservative (read: less expensive and complex) procedure possible. In fact, sometimes a cavity can actually be prevented if a weak spot in the tooth enamel is detected in time.
Make time to visit your dentist during National Dental Hygiene Month! Autumn is also a great time to have your smile seen about, as candy seems to be pervasive during Halloween. Take the time to book a checkup and cleaning in October or November. If you have dental insurance, this visit should be completely covered! That’s great news for your smile… and your wallet.
